XXXVII AICA Congress - Caribbean
Repositions and Repossessions
|
Dear Colleagues
AICA Southern Caribbean is very pleased to be hosting the 37th Annual
AICA Congress in November 2003 in Barbados and Martinique. We invite you
to participate in a very exciting programme and welcome the opportunity
to bring an international body of critics to the wealth of Caribbean cultures.
AICA Southern Caribbean was established in 1997 as a regional chapter,
representing members in several countries that individually did not have
a sufficient membership base to establish independent national chapters.
One of the priorities of our unique chapter has been to serve as a conduit
for the exchange of dialogue between often isolated art communities. We
currently represent members residing in Barbados, Martinique, Guadeloupe,
Jamaica, Guyana, Haiti, Curacao, Cuba and Florida. In our commitment to
interaction and development, AICA Southern Caribbean has planned an agenda
of discussions and events that will highlight concerns immanent to the
region and of global relevance. It promises to be an historic event for
the Caribbean, and a stimulating one for all participants.
In this spirit of regional partnering, AICA Dominican Republic has agreed
to host the pre-congress tour, which will coincide with a number of exciting
cultural events. In this way, the English, French and Spanish Caribbean
are each well-represented. We look forward to seeing you at what promises
to be a unique and unforgettable Congress!
Allison Thompson
President, AICA Southern Caribbean
Themes of the Congress
The themes proposed for this congress invite participants to rethink
what art is and what art does. This challenge has particular relevance
to the Caribbean – a region which has traditionally been marginalized,
exoticized or ignored by larger, urban developed art centres. Its history
of confluences of indigenous American, European, African and Asian cultures
under colonialism, and the subsequent post-modern penetrations of tourism
and mass media provide a hybrid model of a phenomenon found throughout
the globe. The theme of ‘Repositioning’ speaks to the production
and promotion of art outside traditional ‘art-centres’, referring
both to geographical and institutional locations. Proposing, establishing,
recognizing new positions, both physical and intellectual, necessitates
an attendant repositioning or repossession of power.
1. PUBLIC ART / POPULAR ART
During this session the focus will be on the interaction of art and
people. This will be addressed from two perspectives: art – both
official and unofficial – in public spaces; and popular art –
alternatively identified as outsider art, intuitive art etc.
An event such as Carnival provides only one example of the intersection
of these two sub-themes.
2. ARTISTIC GROWTH IN SMALL / DEVELOPING COMMUNITIES
This session will identify and address the challenges faced by artists,
critics and institutions who are working for the development of visual
culture in small and/ or developing countries. Economic, political,
technical restrictions; the impact of tourism; cultural marginalization
are some of the areas of concern.
3. THE INSTITUTIONS – THE CURATOR – THE CRITIC
Cultural foundations, national museums, commercial galleries, biennials,
art journals, international funding agencies and the economics, personalities,
motivations, justifications that sustain them. This session will address
the necessity, development and impact of these entities – how
they respond to, stimulate, validate, manipulate, segregate various
aspects of visual culture.
