The 8th International Istanbul Biennial organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts that will take place between 18 September – 16 November 2003. The 8th edition of the Istanbul Biennial will be curated by Dan Cameron and will host 80 artists from 40 countries. Dan Cameron has developed the curatorial framework of the 8th Istanbul Biennial as “Poetic Justice”. Through the concept of “Poetic Justice”, the exhibition will be an attempt to articulate an area of creative activity in which the seemingly opposing concepts of poetry and justice are brought into play together. The underlying premise of the 8th Istanbul Biennial will be to reconsider the wide stylistic breach between two different forms of art-making: one which takes as its subject the world and its affairs, a second one that addresses concerns which are more identified with the viewer’s inner life. And through the contributions of the participating artists who share a desire to ground their carefully articulated viewpoints about the outside world in a philosophical system that regards poetry as the pinnacle of human thought, “Poetic Justice” will bring together ideas that connect a broad array of disciplines, media and stylistic attitudes, and will try to bridge those two poles of art making. (You may find detailed information about the concept of the 8th Istanbul Biennial at our web site at www.istfest.org) The 8th Istanbul Biennial will host approximately 80 artists from 40 countries and will utilise four venues; namely the Antrepo a 4.000 squaremeters former warehouse on the shore of the Bosphorous, the Tophane, now turned into an exhibition space was constructed in 1451 as a war-cannon manufacturing facility and barracks and the Yerebatan Cistern which was built by Justinian in 532 was used to store water for the Great Palace during Byzantine Empire and the Hagia Sophia, the greatest architectural landmarks of the world. The press opening of the 8th Istanbul Biennial will take place on the 18th of September and will be followed by panel discussions, performances, parties and other special events during 19th, 20th, 21st and 22nd.
